Heute stand die Besichtigung des ersten Juwels unserer Reise auf dem Programm: Valencia. Valencia liegt im Osten Spaniens und ist ca. 350 Kilometer von Barcelona entfernt. Die MS Eurodam lag von 08:00 Uhr bis 16:30 Uhr im Hafen der drittgrößten Stadt Spaniens. Da wir bereits einmal in der wunderschönen Innenstadt von Valencia waren, hatten wir uns für heute einen Besuch im Aquarium vorgenommen. Das Aquarium von Valencia ist sogar das größte Aquarium Europas.
Auf dem Schiff erhielten wir am ersten Tag bereits den „Your Europe Explorer: Your Guide to the Destinations, Dining, Events and Entertainment along your Journey“ von Holland America Line. Diese nützliche Broschüre mit Tipps zu den Reisezielen erhielt auch wertvolle Informationen zu den Museen, Kirchen und anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten in und um Valencia herum.
Frühstück auf der Kabine
Das Wetter heute war leider durchwachsen, aber bei bedeckten 19 Grad war es immerhin nicht zu warm. Wir wollten früh am Morgen los und hatten uns das Frühstück kostenlos in unsere Signature Suite bestellt. Um Frühstück auf der Kabine zu essen, füllt man am Abend vorher eine Liste aus, auf der man verschiedene Getränke und Gerichte ankreuzen kann, wie z.B. Kaffee, Tee, Milch, Saft, Bagels, Toast, Rührei, Speck, Cornflakes oder Muffins. Außerdem gibt man die Personenzahl und die Kabinennummer an sowie die gewünschte Frühstückszeit (zwischen 06:00 Uhr und 10:00 Uhr), zu der das Frühstück gebracht werden soll. Die ausgefüllte Liste haben wir dann abends außen an unsere Kabinentür gehängt. Die Frühstücksbestellung für den nächsten Morgen muss bis 02:00 Uhr nachts außen an der Kabinentür hängen. Pünktlich zur gewünschten Zeit kam unser Frühstück auf einem großen Tablett und wir stärkten uns für den Tag. Jetzt konnte es losgehen zum Aquarium.
Wie komme ich vom Hafen in die Innenstadt oder zum Aquarium?
In Valencia legen die Schiffe recht weit entfernt vom Stadtkern an. Daher wird an Bord meistens ein Shuttlebus angeboten. Laufen in die Innenstadt soll etwa 1 Stunde dauern. Als wir vom Schiff ins Hafengebäude kamen, war direkt am Ende der Rolltreppe eine Wifi-Zone und ein Stand der Touristeninformation. Dort gab es gratis Stadtpläne und wir haben hier bereits unsere Eintrittskarten für das Aquarium gekauft. Das hatte den Vorteil, dass wir später im Aquarium nicht mehr an der Kasse anstehen mussten. Um in Valencia vom Hafen in die Stadt oder zum Aquarium zu kommen gab es verschiedene Möglichkeiten:
- Shuttleservice von Holland America
Holland America bietet einen kostenpflichtigen Shutttleservice vom Schiff in die Innenstadt an. Tickets konnte man auf dem Schiff kaufen. Der erste Shuttlebus startete um 08:30 und der letzte Shuttlebus fuhr um 16:00 Uhr.
- Taxi
Natürlich gab es auch direkt am Hafengebäude mehrere Taxis die unterschiedliche Fahrten anboten. Eine Fahrt in die Innenstadt kostete 15 Euro und zum Aquarium 9 Euro. Außerdem boten die Taxis Stadtrundfahrten für max. 4 Personen für 28 Euro die Stunde an.
- Hop-on Hop-Off Busse
Es gab einen roten Touristenbus der einem im bekannten Hop-on Hop-off Stil für 17 Euro durch die Stadt brachte.
- Öffentlicher Busverkehr
Es gibt auch eine super Busverbindung mit dem öffentlichen Bus. Sowohl in die Innenstadt als auch zum Aquarium und zur Stadt der Künste und Wissenschaft (Ciutat de les Artes les Ciències). Wir gingen aus dem Hafengebäude raus und geradeaus auf eine Mauer zu. Hier hing schon der Wegweiser zum öffentlichen Bus. Wir folgten dem Wegweiser und gingen links zur Hauptstraße und zum großen Kreisel.
Im rechten Teil des Kreisels hielt der Bus. Zum City Center fuhr die Nummer 4. Zum Aquarium und zur Stadt der Wissenschaft die Nummer 95. Eine Fahrt kostete 1,50 Euro pro Person und die Fahrt dauerte jeweils ca. 20 Minuten. An der Bushaltestelle war auch beschrieben wie man beide Busse zu einer Stadtrundfahrt für 4,50 Euro kombinieren kann. Der Bus Nr. 95 hält direkt vor dem Eingang zum Aquarium.
Unsere Top 4 Highlights im Aquarium von Valencia
Das Aquarium von Valencia ist das größte Aquarium Europas und man braucht recht viel Zeit um alles zu sehen. Wir haben den ganzen Tag dort verbracht. Das Gelände ist sehr schön angelegt mit vielen verschiedenen Gebäuden.
Diese vier Punkte waren unsere Highlights im Aquarium von Valencia:
- Delfinshow
Die Delfinshow fand während unseres Aufenthalts zwei Mal statt. Wir gingen zur ersten Show. Sie war anders als die sonst üblichen Delfinshows, die wir von anderen Aquarien kannten. Es war nicht einfach eine unterhaltsame Show, sondern es wurde auch viel über den Schutz der Meere und über die Delfine erzählt.
- Tapas im Restaurant
Da man im Aquarium den ganzen Tag verbringen kann, lohnt sich ein kleiner Abstecher ins Restaurant mit Bar. Hier gab es typische Tapas, die wir uns an der Theke der Bar ausgesucht und dann auf der Terrasse in der Sonne genossen haben.
- Tunnel durch die Haiwelt
Im Gebäude mit den Haien gibt es einen riesigen Glastunnel. Hier schwammen Haie und Stachelrochen mit anderen Fischen direkt neben und über unseren Köpfen. Es ist ein wahnsinniges Gefühl, wenn man so nah an einem Hai dran ist. Gott sei Dank, trennten uns 33 cm Panzerglas.
- Arktis und Antarktis
Arktis und Antarktis liegen direkt nebeneinander und sind mit einem Tunnel verbunden. In der Arktis haben wir die Beluga Wale beobachtet und in der Antarktis die Pinguine. Es war einfach nur ein wunderschönes Erlebnis.
Rückfahrt zur Eurodam
Nach einem schönen Tag im Aquarium fuhren wir mit dem Bus zurück zur Eurodam. Bei der Ausfahrt aus dem Hafen von Valencia sahen wir noch ein Costa Schiff.
Dann machten wir uns fertig für den Gala-Abend. Beim Gala Abend auf der Eurodam ist formelle Kleidung gewünscht. Also ein schicke Abendgarderobe wie Anzug oder Kleid.
Gala-Abend: Happy Birthday Holland America Line
Der heutige Gala-Abend hatte einen besonderen Anlass. Wir feierten den 143. Geburtstag von Holland-America Line. Was für ein Glück! Schon seit dem Jahr 1873 fährt die Holland America Line Passagiere über die Weltmeere. Damals fuhr sie hauptsächlich von Rotterdam nach New York und profitierte von den Auswandererströmen. Noch heute dient Rotterdam für die Reederei als traditionelles Kreuzfahrtziel und Königin Máxima der Niederlande taufte am 20. Mai 2016 sogar das neue Kreuzfahrtschiff MS Koningsdam.
Eine große Torte mit dem Geburtstagsschriftzug begrüßte uns am Eingang des Hauptrestaurants. Die Tische waren sehr schön eingedeckt mit einer silberfarbenen Menükarte. Heute gab es vier Gänge zur Auswahl.
Als Vorspeise gab es zum Beispiel Schnecken, oder einen Garnelencocktail und als Zwischengang Suppe oder Salat. Als Hauptgang hatten wir Lamm und Filet Wellington. Danach gab es noch verschiedene Nachtische wie Eis oder eine Käseplatte.
Nach diesem tollen ersten Tag an Land und dem wunderbarem Gala-Abend freuten wir uns auf Juwel Nummer zwei: Cartagena.
[:en]Today we visited the first gem of our trip: Valencia. Valencia is located in eastern Spain and has a distance of 350 kilometers to Barcelona. Valencia ist he third largest city of Spain. The MS Eurodam was in port from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Since we have already been in this beautiful city, we planned to visit the aquarium this time. The Aquarium of Valencia is Europe’s largest aquarium.
On the first day on board we received a travel guide from Holland America Line called „Your Europe Explorer: Your Guide to the Destinations, Dining, Events and Entertainment along your Journey“. This useful brochure had tips for every destination on our cruise. There was a map and some information about the museums, churches and other sights of Valencia.
Breakfast in the cabin
The weather was unfortunately not so good, but at least we had 19 degrees and it was not too warm. We wanted to start early in the morning and ordered breakfast to be served in our Signature Suite. To eat breakfast in the cabin, you fill out a list in the evening, where you can tick several drinks and dishes for breakfast such as coffee, tea, milk, juice, bagels, toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, cereals or muffins. You also write down the number of persons, the cabin number and the desired breakfast time (from 6 to 10 am). You have to place the list outside of your cabin door untl 2 am at night. The next day we got our breakfast on a large tray and were strengthened for the day. Now it was time to go to the aquarium.
How to get from the Port to the City Center or to the Aquarium?
In Valencia, the cruise ships dock quite far away from the center. Therefore, most cruise ships offer a shuttle service. To walk to the city center takes about one hour. When we got off the ship, we went into the port building. On the right at the end of the escalator was a wifi zone and a tourist office. There you could get free city maps and we already bought our tickets for the aquarium. Pre-buyng tickets had the advantage, that we no longer had to queue at the entrance. There were several ways to get from the port to the city or to the aquarium:

Shuttle service from Holland America Line
Holland America Line offered a shuttle bus from the ship to the city center. Tickets could be bought on the ship. The first shuttle bus started at 8:30 am and the last shuttle bus left at 4 pm.

Taxi
Of course there were also several taxis right next to the port building, which offered different tours. A ride to the city center cost about 15 euros and it costs 9 euros to get to the aquarium. The taxis also offered sightseeing tours for up to 4 people, which cost 28 euros per hour.

Hop-on hop-off bus
There was a red tourist bus similar to the famous hop-on hop-off bus, which cost 17 euros for a day tour.

Public bus service
Valencia has also a very convenient public bus system. You can take the public bus to the city as well as to the aquarium and the City of Arts and Science (Ciutat de les Artes les Ciències). We walked out of the port building and walked straight towards a wall. Here was already a sign for the public bus.
We followed the signs and went left to the main road and the large roundabout. In the right part of the roundabout the public bus stopped. You have to take the bus number 4 to get to the city center. To get to the aquarium and the town of science you have to take the bus number 95. A trip costs 1.50 euros per person and the it took us around 20 minutes. At the bus stop was also described how to combine both buses to a city tour for 4.50 euros. Bus number 95 stops right outside the entrance of the aquarium.
Our 4 Highlights in the Aquarium of Valencia
The Aquarium of Valencia is the largest aquarium in Europe and it takes a lot of time to see everything. We spent the whole day there. The aquarium consists of many different buildings.
These were our highlights and must-dos at the aquarium in Valencia:

Dolphin Show
The dolphin show took place twice. We went to the first show. This show was different from the usual dolphin shows, which we knew from other aquariums. It was not simply an entertaining show, but also very informative as they told a lot about the protection of the seas and the dolphins.

Tapas Restaurant
Since you can spend the whole day in the aquarium, it is worth to visit the restaurant and bar. There we tried typical tapas. We chose them at the counter of the bar and then enjoyed them on the terrace in the sun.

Tunnel through the world of sharks
In the shark building is a huge glass tunnel. Here we saw all kind of sharks and stingrays right next to us and above our heads. It’s an amazing feeling when you know that you are so close to the sharks. Thankfully, a thick bulletproof glass was inbetween us.

Arctic and Antarctic
The Arctic and Antarctic are right next to each other and are connected with a tunnel. In the Arctic, we watched the beluga whales and in the Antarctica we saw cute penguins. It was a wonderful experience.
Return to the Eurodam
After a day at the aquarium, we took the bus back to the Eurodam. At the exit from the port of Valencia we also saw a Costa ship.
Then we got ready for the gala evening. At the gala evening on the Eurodam you should wear formal clothes. It is a great possibility to wear a suit and a dress.
Gala Evening: Happy Birthday Holland America Line
Today’s gala evening was a special occasion. We celebrated the 143rd birthday of Holland America Line. Since 1873, the Holland America Line takes passengers across the oceans. At that time, the ships went mainly from Rotterdam to New York and benefited from the emigration flows. Even today the city Rotterdam is still a traditional cruise destination and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands christened the new cruise ship MS Koningsdam on the 20th of May this year.
A large cake with the birthday lettering greeted us at the entrance of the main restaurant. The tables were decorated very nicely with a silver-colored menu card. Today there were four courses to choose from. As a starter we could choose for example snails or a shrimp cocktail and as an intermediate gear soup or salad. For the main course we had lamb and beef Wellington. There were also various desserts such as ice cream or a cheese plate. After this great day ashore and the wonderful gala evening we looked forward to our gem number two: Cartagena.

Super geschrieben. Wir haben das Aquarium auch besucht und waren begeistert. Insbesondere der Glastunnel hat es uns angetan. So nah sind wir den Meerestieren noch nie gekommen.
