Seabourn – What exactly does luxury on board mean?
29. January 2025

Deciding on the right time of year for a cruise depends on various factors. These include the climate, vacation times, the availability of certain routes, the duration of a trip and, of course, your own time planning. But there are other important aspects that should be included in the planning.

The budget is an important factor. Prices for cruises vary considerably depending on the season. While high season periods such as summer vacations or the Christmas period are often associated with higher costs, there are attractive offers for price-conscious travelers in the low season. Those who book early can benefit from early booking discounts, while last-minute offers are a good way for flexible vacationers to save money.

Personal preferences also play a major role. Those who want to explore vibrant cities should choose routes with many port stops, while nature lovers may prefer remote regions or expedition cruises. The type of cruise is also crucial: while large ocean liners offer a wide range of entertainment, smaller ships offer a more intimate experience and allow access to less frequented ports.

Another point is your own travel experience. Newcomers to cruising should first choose shorter routes to find out whether this type of travel suits them. For example, there are taster cruises with just a few days, often an extended weekend, on board. It is also advisable to choose a route in well-known areas, such as the Mediterranean. There are many well-developed ports where travelers can go ashore independently and arrange excursions flexibly. Experienced cruisers, on the other hand, may consider longer voyages with crossings or exotic destinations. You should also take health aspects into account – if you suffer from seasickness, you should prefer calmer routes with less rough seas.

Other factors for choosing a cruise by season

Other factors that play a role are the on-board offerings and the leisure program. Those who value wellness and relaxation should choose a ship with extensive spa facilities, while adventure-seekers might prefer ships with climbing walls, water slides or go-kart tracks. On-board catering can also be a decisive criterion – from buffet restaurants to gourmet kitchens, there is a wide choice that should be considered according to taste.

Each season offers its own advantages and challenges that should be considered before booking. In this article, we give you a few tips for the best travel destinations for spring, summer, fall and winter.

Spring – pleasant temperatures and few crowds

Spring is an excellent time for cruises in the Mediterranean, as the temperatures are pleasant and the sights are less crowded. The Caribbean is also particularly suitable at this time of year, as the hurricane season has not yet started and the weather conditions are stable. We have had good experiences with cruises from Miami to Mexico and Belize or a cruise to the Caribbean islands.

Another insider tip is Japan during the cherry blossom season, where a cruise through the island kingdom offers a unique natural spectacle. The months of March and April are a particularly good time for this. Atlantic crossings are also popular, with passengers leaving Europe and arriving in the Caribbean or the USA. Other attractive destinations in spring are the Canary Islands, South Africa or the Azores, where nature is in full bloom. Off the Azores, for example, you can also see blue whales during this time.

For the more adventurous, there are expeditions to Patagonia or the Galápagos Islands, where the wildlife is particularly active at this time of year. Those who are more interested in culture can take a river cruise on the Danube or the Douro to experience cities such as Vienna, Budapest or Porto in spring.

Tip: If you are flexible, you can take advantage of last-minute offers for spring cruises, as many providers offer discounts during this time in order to fill the ships to capacity.

Summer – perfect for northern routes and family trips

Summer is an absolute peak season for many cruises, especially for families. We particularly recommend routes through Scandinavia, the British Isles or to Alaska, where the temperatures are pleasant and breathtaking landscapes await.

It is not advisable to travel to the Middle East in summer, as temperatures can reach over 50 degrees. Instead, there are trips along the Norwegian fjords or through the Baltic States. Trips around Iceland are also very popular.

There are also cruises through Canada and New England, where you can enjoy a mixture of nature and culture. However, these trips can also be taken in late summer or in autumn during Indian summer, when the Canadian forests turn into a sea of color. Expedition cruises to the Arctic are also ideal in summer, as the melting ice makes it easier to access remote regions and makes impressive wildlife viewing possible.

Tip: As summer trips are often expensive, booking early or choosing a less popular route can help you save money.

Autumn – great value offers and special destinations

Autumn is an attractive time to travel, as many cruise ships are relocated to new regions and repositioning cruises are offered at reasonable prices. For example, you can travel from Europe to the Caribbean or South America.

The northeast of the USA and Canada are particularly worth seeing in the fall. The fall foliage coloring, the Indian summer, is a true natural spectacle in New England.

The Mediterranean also offers ideal conditions in the fall: Pleasant temperatures, fewer tourists and lower prices make a trip at this time particularly worthwhile. Trips to the Greek islands or along the Adriatic coast are also particularly beautiful in the fall. Then the temperatures are no longer too high and the cities are not overcrowded.

Other interesting destinations in the fall are Hawaii, the Seychelles or Cape Verde, which still offer pleasant temperatures.

In addition, cruises to South America or along the west coast of Africa are particularly attractive, as the temperatures there are not as extreme as in midsummer and the rainy season ends in November.

Tip: If you like to travel longer, you can often find attractive offers on positioning cruises in the fall. These can sometimes take two to three weeks and include a few days at sea.

Winter – Sunny destinations and a festive atmosphere

In the cold months, many travelers are drawn to warmer regions. Popular cruise destinations include the Caribbean, South America and the Middle East. Dubai in particular is an ideal destination in the winter months with its pleasant temperatures. This is also when many attractions are open and you can go on day trips into the desert.

Cruises around the holidays are another highlight. Spending Christmas or New Year’s Eve on the high seas creates unforgettable memories. Hamburg, Madeira and Rio are just a few examples of spectacular fireworks and laser shows that can be experienced directly from the ship. There is also a big New Year’s Eve gala on board many cruise ships with a show, music and often an impressive laser show or fireworks display.

European river cruises during the Advent season are also very popular, as they offer the opportunity to explore various Christmas markets. We had a great time with the whole family over Christmas on a river cruise, as we were able to visit the cities and Christmas markets during the day and spend time together in the evening.

Tip: Cruises during the festive season are often booked up quickly, which is why early planning is advisable. However, those who are spontaneous can still get hold of discounted remaining places shortly before the start of the trip.

Conclusion: choose the best time of year for cruises

Every season has its own charm. Those who are flexible and plan their cruise strategically can not only save money, but also find the best travel experience for themselves.
